129 Ways to Get A Husband

McCall’s was a monthly magazine directed at the women of America. It was published by the McCall Corporation, and enjoyed great popularity through much of the 20th century, peaking at a readership of 8.4 million in the early 1960s.

History of McCall's Magazine

In the 1870s James McCall moved to America from Scotland. He ran a tailor shop with his wife, Belle. In 1876 they released a 4-page brochure called, "The Queen — The Illustrated Magazine of Fashion. In it they showed off some of their patterns. After James McCall died in 1884, the magazine's name was changed to include his surname. "McCall's Magazine, the Queen of Fashion". It now had full-page photos of clothes, articles, stories and even had advice for its readers.

Rosie

In 2001 it was renamed again, to "Rosie", and after 125 years McCall's Magazine is no longer on American shelves. In 2003, Rosie Magazine went out of business.

The 1950s and 1960s

McCalls was a fixture in the 1950s and 1960s. It was looked at as a guide. It was one of the greats.Samir Husni, magazine industry expert and professor of journalism at the University of Mississippi.

During that time, when McCall's was at its most popular, the way men and women saw each other was very different than now. Men and women generally complied with how society wanted them to; they conformed to strict gender stereotypes.

In January 1958, McCall's published an article called, '129 Ways to Get A Husband'. Reading it now you will definitely need to keep your tongue firmly in cheek, but it apparently gives women advice on where to find a good man, how to make him notice you, and how to finally land him. Believe it or not, a group of 16 people created this list. Even more incredibly, they weren't all men.

The panel was made up of a songwriter, a marriage consultant, airline stewardess, a police commissioner, a housewife, an investment banker, a psychologist, a bachelor, a newlywed, and an engineer. Using a technique that inspired thousands of bright business ideas, they tried it on love and marriage and came up with the following:
